On July 17, the first group of children from Ukraine arrived in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy, for Hope for Ukraine’s fourth annual “No Sirens Summer Camp.”
When discussing the impact of the war on Ukrainian communities, children are often overlooked. While their fathers are called to the front lines and their mothers are left to manage households alone, drones and missiles frequently force these children into bomb shelters when they should be in the classroom. This profound toll on their emotional well-being and physical safety highlights the urgent need for spaces where kids can simply be kids again—and that is exactly what our Hope for Ukraine No Sirens Summer Camp accomplishes.
Their days start early at 7:00 AM, filled with enthusiasm for morning exercises before coming together for morning gatherings to pray, sing, and enjoy each other’s company. Supported by our staff and dedicated volunteers, these children keep hope at the center of everything they do. After breakfast, they spend hours at the beach—playing volleyball, splashing in the sea, and soaking up the sun. After lunch, they continue building friendships, getting to experience their childhood far away from a war zone.
For many of these children, daily life back home is measured in interrupted sleep, remote learning, and the sudden blare of air-raid alarms. Here, the sound of waves replaces the sirens, giving their minds and bodies a long-overdue rest from chronic stress. Even after full 12-hour days—which include exciting day trips to Venice and the local zoo—they still have endless energy and enthusiasm to keep the fun going.
In the evenings, they gather for interactive workshops like creative prayer, acting, or t-shirt painting. In every single moment, hope is present. They support one another both in Ukraine and beyond, and their bonds only continue to grow stronger. Their resilience is undeniable as they keep smiles on their faces despite everything they have endured. While their time at the camp is temporary, our team is determined to make every single second count.
This camp is only the beginning of Hope for Ukraine’s summer season. The energy is already overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to bringing that same spark of hope—and many more smiles—to even more kids in the weeks ahead.
