Danger doesn’t have to be seen. In addition to the threat of a drone hovering above you or distant artillery fire; there’s a much more subtle and dangerous force at play when it comes to civilians living through this conflict. A variety of small, almost imperceptible explosives are being laid down throughout the country. They’re blending in with their surroundings, which makes them very difficult to see and therefore extremely dangerous to families and children alike, especially in areas where humanitarian aid is actively being delivered by our volunteers at Hope for Ukraine. Because of the placement of these hidden explosive devices, people who normally walk freely around town can no longer do so without fear of injury or death.
What Are Hidden Mines in Ukraine?
Hidden mines in Ukraine, (also known as anti-personnel landmines) differ greatly from traditional landmines. They are typically smaller than standard landmines and usually camouflage themselves to look like everyday objects like toys or rocks and the average civilian would never suspect that he or she could be walking over a deadly device. These types of mines may be found in a variety of settings including residential neighborhoods, city streets, parks and other open spaces. Civilians especially children will find it virtually impossible to completely avoid these hidden mines.
Why Hidden Mines Are So Dangerous
There are several reasons why these mines present such a high level of danger. One reason is their ability to remain undetected. Like all types of landmines, these hidden mines contain an explosive charge. They’re also designed to be very difficult to spot until someone steps on them. Often, because they’re relatively small, they may resemble something as innocuous as a rock. As a result, if a civilian walks near them, it’s likely that he/she won’t realize the danger that exists until it’s too late. Even slight pressure applied to a mine can cause an explosion. In fact, since hidden mines can be triggered by so little pressure, ordinary day-to-day activities such as going for a walk, shopping, or simply allowing children to play outside–may suddenly turn into potentially lethal events.
Children represent a unique population when discussing the perils presented by hidden mines. Because children tend to be curious about things they don’t recognize, they often spend considerable amounts of time examining and exploring items that appear unusual or interesting. Children who unknowingly come across hidden mines are far more vulnerable than adults. As a result, families are forced to constantly assess whether it’s worth taking the risk of leaving the safety of their homes.
As a direct result of the existence of hidden mines, people’s lives are being severely impacted. Neighborhoods and public places like playgrounds, and parks that previously represented safe areas for residents and visitors now pose a significant threat. Civilians are becoming hesitant to engage in normal daily routines because of their concern about encountering hidden mines. Since accessing basic necessities like food, medicine and water many of which are provided through ongoing humanitarian programs in Ukraine require traversing unknown territory, individuals are forced to limit their movements. In many cases, families are choosing to stay indoors or seek shelter in order to minimize their exposure to potential hazards.
While the physical aspects of living with hidden mines represent serious concerns, the emotional/psychological impacts should not be overlooked either. The uncertainty surrounding where hidden mines may exist represents a continuous source of anxiety and apprehension for those who are required to venture out. As a result, even simple choices made by civilians regarding their daily lives are influenced by fear of hidden mines.
The Impact on Humanitarian Aid
In addition to causing harm to innocent civilians, hidden mines also significantly complicate the mission of organizations providing humanitarian assistance. Teams responsible for delivering food, medical supplies and other essential services must take extra precautions before attempting to access affected areas.
Careful route planning and precise timing must occur prior to delivery. Because the situation is unpredictable, aid workers run an increased risk of being injured while traveling into communities in order to assist. In spite of these complications, organizations such as Hope for Ukraine’s humanitarian aid efforts continue to develop ways to effectively reach families in need despite the evolving risks they encounter. By coordinating with local organizations and developing detailed plans for each delivery, humanitarian aid continues to reach those most in need.
Awareness is important in reducing the number of accidents occurring due to hidden mines and assisting in educating communities on potential dangers. Awareness highlights the importance of continuing humanitarian support in Ukraine. Just as conditions in the region continue to evolve and change, so too will the needs of those affected by these changes.
