She Buried Ukraine’s Flag Under Occupation. Then She Raised It Again.

In the video, a woman in Kherson lifts a paving stone from the ground in her yard. Underneath it is something she had carefully wrapped and hidden during the occupation: her Ukrainian flag.

She had buried the blue and yellow beneath the stones to keep it safe. It stayed there while her city was occupied, out of sight but never forgotten. Then, after Ukrainian defenders liberated Kherson, she went back for it. She lifted the stone, pulled the flag from the ground, opened it, brushed away the dirt, and held it up again.

The part that stayed with me was her smile.

I see a lot of images and stories from Ukraine through my work, and every once in a while there is one that I keep thinking about long after I first see it. This was one of those moments because you really do not need much explanation. You can see what that flag meant to her.

She Was Waiting for the Day She Could Raise It Again

What I find so powerful about this story is the decision she made before that video was ever taken. She could have thrown the flag away because displaying it had become dangerous. She could have abandoned it. Instead, she wrapped it carefully, found a place beneath the ground, and protected it.

To bury something like that is also, in a way, to believe you are going to need it again.

She did not know exactly when that day would come. She did not know how long Kherson would remain under occupation or what would happen before she could uncover it. But she kept the flag anyway. Somewhere beneath those paving stones was a piece of the Ukraine she refused to give up.

I think this is one of the things people outside Ukraine can sometimes miss when we talk about the strength of the Ukrainian people. Courage during war is not always something huge or dramatic. A lot of it happens quietly. It happens in homes, apartment buildings, villages, shelters, hospitals, kitchens, and backyards.

It is a family finding a way to cook when the electricity goes out. It is a volunteer returning to an older person's home because they know nobody else may come. It is a parent doing everything possible to give their child a few hours that still feel like childhood. It is someone continuing to care for a neighbor or community while living through the same war themselves.

And sometimes it is a woman burying her Ukrainian flag because she believes there will come a day when she can raise it again.

This Is What Defiant Hope Means to Me

Watching this video immediately made me think about Defiant Hope, the upcoming book written by Hope For Ukraine Founder and CEO Yuriy Boyechko with Halyna Lubinska.

The book tells the stories of ordinary Ukrainians whose lives have been changed by the war and the choices they made when everything around them changed. It is about civilians, volunteers, families, aid workers, and people who found themselves facing situations they never expected, but still chose to serve, protect, help, and keep going.

When I think about the words defiant hope, this woman is exactly the kind of person who comes to mind.

Hope can sound passive if we are not careful with that word. This was not passive. She took action to protect something that mattered to her because she believed occupation would not be the end of the story. She was preparing for another day, even when she could not know when that day would arrive.

The Headlines Cannot Tell the Whole Story

This matters because after years of war, it becomes very easy for people outside Ukraine to see another headline and keep scrolling. Another attack. Another damaged building. Another community without reliable electricity. Another family forced from home. When we see these things over and over again, there is a real danger that people start seeing a war instead of seeing the people living through it.

Then a video like this brings everything back down to one person.

There is no statistic in this moment. There is a woman kneeling in her own yard, lifting a stone, and taking back something she had been forced to hide. When she opens that flag again, you can understand a little more clearly what occupation meant to her and what liberation meant too.

This is one of the reasons storytelling is so important to what we do at Hope For Ukraine. The war is enormous, but people experience it one life at a time. Behind every number is someone trying to feed a family, protect a child, care for an aging parent, stay warm, keep a phone charged, rebuild a home, or simply hold onto the life they had before the war.

We cannot allow those people to disappear behind the numbers.

Our Job Is to Stand Beside Them

At Hope For Ukraine, our response is practical. Our local teams, volunteers, and trusted partners help provide food, shelter, medical assistance, energy support, children's programs, help for older Ukrainians, and aid for people living in communities affected by the war. But I think it is important to say that Hope For Ukraine does not give people like this woman their courage. That courage already exists. We see it constantly in the people our teams meet.

Our job is to stand beside them.

If someone is determined to remain in their home, we can help make sure there is food on the table. If a family is facing another blackout, we can help provide a way to keep a light on, cook, or charge a phone. If an older person has been left isolated by the war, our volunteers can keep returning so that person knows they have not been forgotten.

These things may seem small compared with the scale of the war, but they matter enormously to the person receiving them. They make it possible to get through another day while holding onto the belief that better days can still come.

She Kept the Flag

That is the part of this story I keep coming back to.

She kept it.

Even when she could not raise it, she kept it. Even when it had to be buried beneath the ground, she kept it. She believed there would be another day when the blue and yellow could come back into the light.

For her, that day eventually came.

There are still Ukrainians waiting for their day. Families are waiting to return home. Parents are waiting for their children to be safe. Communities are waiting to rebuild. People are waiting for loved ones. Millions of ordinary Ukrainians are still trying to build a future while living through a war that keeps interrupting the present.

They continue anyway.

Maybe that is the best definition of defiant hope I can give. It is believing there is something on the other side of this worth holding onto, and refusing to let go of it.
