After a Lifetime of Work, Ukraine’s Seniors Are Struggling to Afford Food

We do not have her name to share, and we do not need to invent the rest of her story to understand what this photo shows. An elderly woman needed food, and our team was there to put it into her hands.

For many older Ukrainians, getting through the month on a pension leaves very little room for anything to go wrong. As of July 2026, about 24% of Ukraine’s pensioners received between 3,001 and 4,000 UAH per month. That is roughly $80 for many people in that group. Nearly 2.4 million pensioners fall into this range, according to Pension Fund of Ukraine data reported by Opendatabot.

That money has to stretch across food, utilities, transportation, household necessities, and other everyday expenses. For some seniors, there may also be medication or additional needs that cannot simply be put off until next month.

Then there is the reality of living through war.

For people in communities closer to the front line, getting food can become even harder. Shelling, drone attacks, damaged infrastructure, unsafe roads, and disrupted commercial supply lines have made daily life far less predictable. Even when a store is open and food is available, being able to afford what is on the shelves is another problem entirely for someone living on a very limited income.

This is why food assistance remains such an important part of Hope For Ukraine’s work.

Through our Hope Begins With A Meal campaign, support helps us purchase food in bulk and get it into the hands of people who need it. Our local teams, trusted partners, and volunteers help carry that work forward, from preparing and transporting food to reaching the communities where families and seniors are waiting.

The work itself can look simple from the outside. A bag is packed. It is loaded onto a vehicle. Someone carries it to a distribution point. Eventually, it reaches the hands of a woman like the one in this photo.

But the impact of that bag is personal. For a senior trying to stretch a small pension, groceries provided through a food package are groceries she does not have to pay for herself. That can leave a little more money for another bill, medication, transportation, or another basic necessity.

For the woman in this photo, we know one thing for certain: food reached her hands.

That matters because the war in Ukraine is now measured in years. The headlines change. Attention moves elsewhere. But the people living through this war still wake up every morning and deal with its consequences. Older Ukrainians do not get to move on simply because the rest of the world has become more accustomed to seeing Ukraine in the news.

Many of these seniors spent decades working, raising families, and building the homes and communities where they expected to grow old. They should not have to spend these years worrying about whether their pension will stretch far enough to cover groceries.

At Hope For Ukraine, this is what keeps our work grounded. We can talk about programs, deliveries, and numbers, but eventually every piece of aid has to reach an actual person. In this case, it reached an elderly woman standing outside with her purse over her shoulder and a bag of food in her arms.

And behind her, more people were waiting.

Hope For Ukraine cannot change every part of what these seniors are facing. But we can continue doing something immediate and real. We can purchase food. We can reach another community. We can fill another bag and make sure another person has something to bring home.
