Ukraine is facing one of the most severe education crises in Europe’s modern history, with millions of children entering yet another school year marked by displacement, uncertainty, and disrupted learning. Against this backdrop, Hope For Ukraine’s Educational Project is providing consistent academic and emotional support to more than 600 children every week—offering stability at a time when traditional schooling has become unpredictable or altogether inaccessible.
For many students, especially those in frontline or recently targeted regions, classrooms have been replaced by temporary shelters, damaged buildings, or intermittent online lessons dictated by power outages and air-raid warnings. According to the United Nations, more than 340 educational facilities were damaged or destroyed in 2025 alone, adding to the 1,611 schools already verified as hit since the start of the full-scale invasion. The true number may be far higher. Today, an estimated 4.6 million children face barriers to education, confronting the fourth consecutive academic year shaped by conflict.
Despite these challenges, Hope For Ukraine is helping ensure that children remain connected to learning, creativity, and possibility. Through weekly after-school programs, HFU volunteers reach students in cities, rural towns, and war-affected communities—creating safe, encouraging environments where children can learn, socialize, and regain a sense of structure. These sessions include tutoring, arts and crafts, creative workshops, holiday activities, and emotional support tailored to children carrying the stress of prolonged uncertainty.
In regions like Kirovograd and Kriviy Rih, after-school arts classes have become a source of joy and resilience. Children craft holiday ornaments, explore painting and drawing, and express themselves freely—activities that provide not only skill development but also psychological relief. These moments of creativity offer an escape from the noise of conflict and help children recover a sense of normal childhood experiences.
HFU’s Educational Project also includes scholarships, learning materials, and student-focused initiatives designed to protect long-term educational opportunity. For many families facing economic hardship or displacement, these resources are lifelines that ensure children stay engaged and connected to learning even when local schools struggle to operate consistently.
The human dimension of this crisis extends far beyond test scores and school buildings. It includes the students logging into online lessons from bomb shelters, the teachers adapting curricula for unpredictable conditions, and the volunteers working tirelessly to bring hope to communities under strain. This is a story not only about education, but about safeguarding the future of Ukraine’s next generation—its thinkers, creators, and future leaders.
Hope For Ukraine continues to expand educational programming as needs grow, reaching more children each month and partnering with communities to strengthen access to learning.
